Learn / Genre strategy

Choosing a genre that actually sells.

For most indie authors, the genre isn't really a choice โ€” you wrote the story you set out to write, and it lands wherever it lands. This guide is about positioning that genre to its best advantage for readers worldwide, not about rewriting the book you've already created.

Where the demand is strongest right now

Romance and romantasy continue to top the earnings charts for self-published authors everywhere, and English-language fiction sells in huge volumes across Amazon's worldwide stores.

Mystery, thriller and suspense follow close behind, with cozy mystery and domestic thriller delivering outsized results for independent authors in particular.

Self-help, business and personal-finance non-fiction keep climbing across every major English-language market, especially when paired with strong companion audiobooks.

Memoir and biography โ€” entrepreneur stories and spiritual journeys above all โ€” build loyal followings through platforms like LinkedIn and Audible.

The categories that are tough to crack

Literary fiction is the hardest space for indies to win in โ€” it's where the major houses still dominate and where awards and critical attention carry the most weight.

Children's picture books are a steep climb: they demand full-colour interiors, costly printing, and a buying audience (parents) that's notoriously difficult to reach through digital channels.

Poetry collections move through social feeds rather than search results โ€” they tend to thrive only when the author already commands a following on Instagram or YouTube.

Choosing your two Amazon categories

Amazon lets you place your book in two primary categories. The temptation is to grab the broadest options on offer, yet the reverse almost always pays off โ€” tighter, more specific categories are far easier to rank highly in.

Target the #1 spot in a narrow category over the #500 spot in a crowded one. Holding the #1 badge counts for far more than sitting at position 500 in a busier category, because it prompts Amazon's algorithm to surface your book to many more readers.

Making the most of your seven keyword slots

Amazon gives you seven keyword slots at listing time. These are the search terms your book will show up for.

Fill them with the full phrases real readers actually type into the search bar โ€” not lone words. 'Slow-burn enemies to lovers romance' will always outperform 'romance'.

We handle this research inside every Professional and Launchpad package โ€” it's one of the highest-leverage things you can nail at launch.
